types of blogs and blog categories

Many people wonder what blogs are and what to do when starting a blog. First of all, before starting  a blog, one should make sure she or he knows what the types of blogs and blog categories are, so as not to get confused in the process.  Although, some blogs work like a mirror of another kind or may be a blog salad of some sort..

So here are a few types of blogs and blog categories:

  • Personal Blogs:  The broadest category by far,  and this kind usually includes blogs about personal topics and opinions about politics, music, family, travel, health, you name it. It is a mixed bag of sorts that anyone who owns a personal blog can actually put anything he or she wished to put depending on his or her topic…
  • Business Blogs: They are usually written by Professionals ranging from teachers, writers, realtors, doctors, or lawyers and any other Profession to share their expertise, and most companies have discovered the power of blogs to get across or to personally connect and engage with their customers. Builds a good business-consumer relations.
  • School Blogs: A great venue for  teachers and students to collaborate on school projects.
  • Non-profit or Advocacy Blogs: These are the blogs that foundations, charities, and human rights groups use as tools to raise awareness and money for their causes and projects.
  • Political Blogs: Most political parties, government agencies, and activists use blogs to connect with their constituencies and supporters.
  • Military Blogs: This is rather unusual, as not all countries have this, but members of the military who blog, report what they see happening in various parts of the world where they are at, and helps them  stay in touch with their families who are somewhere on the other end of the globe.
  • Private Blogs: Are made by some people who wish to make their blogs private and the only purpose is to share photos and memoirs, and some personal information within families, companies, or schools.
  • Sports Blogs: These are made by teams, athletes, and some avid fans to express and share their passion for various sports they support.
  • How-to, Tips and Review Blogs: The thrust of these kinds of  blogs is to share tips and reviews about specific topics such as cooking, games, music, books, movies, and so on and so forth.
  • Scraper Blogs: These are rather the unethical blogs. These blogs take content from other blogs and re-publish posts without permission (the term here is “scraping contents”).
  • SEO blogs: These are the famous “for PR-purpose” Blogs that are written for search engines. These kinds of  blogs are dedicated to trying to make search engines believe that the links are real, thus ranking them or the sites they link in a  positive manner, in other words, ranking becomes  high due to SEO.
  • Affiliate Marketing Blogs: The primary purpose of these blogs is  to drive traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes  like the “Earn from home in 3 easy Steps”, “Shortcuts to top profits!!”,  and the like). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and those with pyramid schemes.  According to WordPress resources though,  when people write their own original book, movie or game reviews and they link them to Amazon, or when people link to their own products on Etsy, they actually do NOT fall into this category.
  • Warez Blogs: They are blogs that promote pirated copies of ebooks, software packages, music, movies, games,  and all things pirated. Illegal but they do exist. Mainly because there are people who patronize them.
  • Automated Blogs: These are blogs that are generated by machines or  computers. Randomly generated blogs, blogs that re-publish press releases, marketing material, search engine results, link dumps, lotto results pages or any other mass-produced content fall under this category.
